BUT NOW I'VE SEEN THE PAY-OFFS EVERYWHERE I LOOK
history
Kal remembers little pictures and scenes from the place of her birth, but she could not tell you where she was from specifically. She could tell you about the vivid pictures of sand and rocks, of a kind woman who often visited her in a lonesome little hut. After that it's all blank faces and voiceless words, blurs and fake memories created by her imagination. The earliest memory she has that wasn't created by her own imagination was being in a cold place filled with ice and snow all throughout the year. Her only family that she could tell you was a silver wolf who looked after her on request of the kindly woman who he'd often said was her mother. But Kal was never so sure about his claims, always stating that she knew and remembered to near-nothing about that person. Only knowing that she had vanished one day without her noticing.
Being raised by a monster, it's pretty obvious that Kal was never one to know about 'civilized life'. In fact, despite being a half-monster; she kept more in her monster form than in her human form. The wolf who she'd called 'Papa Wolf', often brought her gifts such as clothing and plants alongside the times he brought back food. He taught her more about being human than a monster even if she was more like a monster anyway. On occasion they would travel with each other to the nearest village to observe the non-monsters. While Papa Wolf didn't quite know how to explain everything, Kal managed to figure out the language all by herself. Yet she never wanted to leave the wolf who she considered her only family, and him being so loyal; never tried to push her away. There was encouragement for her to explore the world like he'd done when he was a more youthful monster but Kal could never bring herself to leave the boundaries of his territory. But of course, there was always going to be something that would force the unwilling.
Living with monsters often brought monster problems. Such a territory disputes. Kal can still remember the three wolves that attacked Papa Wolf for his home. Even with her by his side, he could not fend them off and so both of them were chased from their home but not before Kal had gotten into an accident with the nearby river. The current was too fast as she wasn't strong enough nor was she built to cling to the ice that hung on the banks and floated downriver with her. She blacked out. When she'd awoken, Kal found herself on a boat on its way to Alverna. Unable to reach shore or jump overboard, Kal stuck with the boat which she later learned was a merchant's ship. It never occurred to her that she would end up being adopted by said merchant. Varius Solrun was his name and he taught her what he could about civilization and trade. He taught her other things like how to use the stars as a map and how to concoct medicine, he'd also taught her about the various types of people in the world.
In truth the man was her pseudo-parent-and-benefactor. But never did he learn, nor any of his colleagues or employees; that she could change into a monster. Papa Wolf had warned her to never shift in front of another or claim she could do so and the girl would never forget that lesson. After she grew up enough and was deemed 'all-grown-up' by her adoptive parent, he gave her a few choices on what to do with life. Whether to adventure the world or to stick with him and his wares or if she wanted to - he could even arrange a marriage for her. Remembering how Papa Wolf always encouraged her to explore the world, Kal chose the first of many options. That is how she ended up in Selphia after finding herself there with her foster parent. The goodbyes were warming and lonely but he always kept sending letters even afterward.

It was the chirps of the birds that alerted Kalani to the morning. She hadn't slept a wink all night, her attention purely focused on the pile of drawn on papers before her. Maps, both land and celestial; data profiles on monsters. She'd drawn up several things on her father's latest letter's request. To her side several vials of medicine littered the desk and floor, materials scattered here and there both in and out of jars. Even her feather collection, which she had so delicately made into a comfy mattress for herself; had been tainted by brews of several different sorts. There was an audible yawn that left her lips and she stopped to take a break and stretch. The poor girl was absolutely covered from head to toe in charcoal.
But Kal didn't mind, she hadn't even noticed her physical state. Nope, she was much more interested in the small box of dried fish she'd stored away. The pain in her stomach only becoming audible now that she had begun to feel her limbs again. It was a good thing she lived outside the town seeing as how all her rustling and bustling caused an awful racket first thing in the morning. Only the critters outside had to suffer her flinging of books and crashing of paper stacks as she dug out her treasured fish box. A fresh meal would have probably benefited her more than her current provisions but in the girl's mind it did perfectly well to settle her tummy's grumblings. Plus she had to tie up the maps and whatnot and get them ready for delivery. She'd spent two days on those things after all, using all her currently owned books and the ones her father sent to her. It was a good thing she liked to draw things out or else she probably would have thrown them into the 'abyss' corner of her little hovel home. AKA, the trashed corner.
